It’s an exciting time to be a ‘foodie’ in Brisbane i’m sure you would agree. It seems no matter which way you turn there is a new bar, cafe, restaurant or diner opening, and if you are anything like me, you want to try them all! But by doing this i have to ask myself, what are we missing?

While it is always exciting to experience something new and be in the know on the latest ‘hotspots’, after speaking to a few chefs and restaurateurs this year i’ve realised how important it is to continue to support our established eateries. How many hidden gems are floating in our midst just waiting for you to discover or when was the last time you visited your ‘must eat’ place. We have seen too many of our favourite established venues hit tough times and have to shut up shop.

I will be the first to admit that i get very caught up in being ‘in the know’. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, in some ways it is part of who i am, but i must also remind myself that there are so many great ‘older’ places that need our continued support or better still our discovery! I urge anyone who reads this to take a look around and instead of going to that hip new place revist an old favourite or try that place you’ve always meant to try. Ask yourself what am i missing and try it before we all miss out!

Yesterday i was lucky enough to attend the book launch of Luke Nguyen’s new book Greater Mekong. It was a fabulous event held at Scrumptious Reads on James st in Fortitude Valley.

Luke Nguyen and Danielle Dixon at the launch of Great Mekong

The one statement from Luke that really stood out for me during his chat with us was that he believes, as Australia’s indigenous people pass on their history through stories of the dream-time, in vietnamese culture that history is told through food and the stories that accompany each dish. I thought this to be a really beautiful sentiment and it really made me think about how my own family history and the memories i hold dear are so closely associated with the dishes i ate as a child. It would be fabulous to hear what your thoughts are on this and do you have a family history that is punctuated with food memories?

Over the coming weeks i’d love to share with you some of my favourite family food stories and the recipes that are really special to me.
